Goal: To acquire experience and expertise in dairy production medicine with large dairy herds and develop an understanding of disease control, biosecurity, nutrition evaluation, calf management, and reproductive health management as encountered on large dairies.

Large dairy training

Disigned to master on-farm working knowledge and skills

Peform individual animal medicine and surgery

mastitis, diagnosis (laboratory) and therapy

Develop prevention and monitoring programs

Learn to establish and manage Standard Operation Procedures for production areas including calving, milking, breeding and health care.

Advanced training

Training at Michigan State University and other educational settings

Maintain a bacteriology laboratory, evaluate milking system and procedures, and develop treatment and contol strategies.

Use Spartan Ration Balancer and understand the Carbohydrate and Protein Model.

Become proficient in DHIA-PCDart, Dairy Comp 305, Excel and statistics.

Develop and complete a short research project on health or production activities for the herd.
